With the spring season just around the corner, it’s time to shed your heavy coats and boots in exchange for lighter layers and footwear. Now there’s one spring trend that I’ve recently grown very fond of, which is favored and mastered by the hottest celebs in the world including Gigi Hadid, Kendell Jenner and Rihanna. Yes, I’m talking about the “athleisure” trend.
These are the looks for when models go off-duty or hit the gym. It allows them to show nonchalant glamor and, more importantly, YOUTH and VITALITY off the runway. Isn’t that what spring is all about?
As for us ordinary people, these outfits are surprisingly easy to style and are ultimately comfortable to wear. To begin with, here are the basic (and trendiest) items that you need:
Left to right, top to bottom:
Adidas Originals/ Common Projects/ Vans/ COS/ Alexander McQueen/ Saint Laurent
Thanks to the Adidas Stan Smith tennis shoes, white sneakers continue to top the sales charts of every fast-moving fashion brand. Not only are Adidas, Common Projects, Vans and On Pedder launching various versions of white sneakers every other week; even luxury brands such as Roger Vivier, Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen and Givenchy are embracing them in their new collections.
In addition to seeing Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner in white sneakers whenever they’re on the street, we’ve also seen Victoria Beckham pulling them off at the latest New York Fashion Week. “I just can’t do heels anymore. At least not when I’m working,” said Victoria, despite once saying that “I can’t concentrate in flats!” So even if you forget the rest of this article, be sure to invest in a trusty pair of white sneakers this season!
As for how to style them, an easy way would be to go with tapered pants or ripped jeans and invisible socks. I also love their summer vibe when paired with a fitted cotton dress.
2. Sports Bra

Tired of crop tops? Here’s a new spin: Wear a sports bra instead! Some versions of crop tops actually look quite similar to sports bras, except that sports bras are mostly fitted and more functional. Wear them like a second skin so you don’t have to worry about nip slips. For sure, a sports bra works in total harmony with athletic tights and sneakers, but also try dressing it up with fancy bomber jackets, sheer tops or even a suit.
3. Sweatpants/ Tracksuit
First 2 from the left: Gigi Hadid and Gwen Stefani
Sweatpants and tracksuits look tasteless unless you amp them up with a glamorous item. Chunky accessories turn them into hip-hop, but a Chanel bag, heels, shades and bright red lipstick are really what you need to make them fashionable. Also, be mindful that your sweatpants or tracksuit has to be fitted instead of slouchy to make things work.
4. Dad’s Hat
First 2 from the left: Rihanna and Kendall Jenner
Raid your dad’s closet for the next fashion hit: his hat. Basically, these are baseball caps embroidered with a simple logo on the front – you know, the kind that dad wears when he goes fishing or golfing. These help to double your sunscreen’s benefits, too.
5. Embroidered Bomber Jacket
First 3 from the left: Rihanna, Oliver Palermo and Kate Moss
I know I’ve been talking about bomber jackets a lot, but really, if what you own is a padded one, it’s time to get a lightweight version since the trend is absolutely staying for spring. You may also want a shiny, embroidered one a la Kate Moss and Olivia Palermo. It just can’t go wrong if these people are wearing it!
Derek Lam/ Lanvin/ Alexander Wang/ Topshop
Last but not least, here’s a sportswear-inspired trend that doesn’t look sporty at all. Led by Alexander Wang, fashion designers have been borrowing metallic eyelets from sneakers and putting them on dresses, bags, belts and sandals. Grommets share the same grunge appeal as studs, except that they’re perforating instead of protruding. This makes room for displaying layers beneath, or for using the grommets to lace up sashes and cords.
